Mechanarchy Custom Built Bicycle Trailers to Suit Your Needs:

Custom Built Trailer Constructed Out of Re-Cycled Materials

At Mechanarchy, we believe that there are enough second hand materials lying around to build just about anything connected with bicycles. The only limit is both your and our imagination! Bicycle Trailers are a great example.

Whether you are a regular Bicycle Rider or a Small to Medium Sized Business looking to find more cost effective and Environmentally Friendly ways of getting your goods around, we can design and build a trailer specifically to meet your needs.

There are a host of inexpensive new trailers available on the market today, but these are limited in many ways:

1) They are not made 'uniquely' for you - If you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to be unique!

2) They may not be long, short or tall enough or have the perfect carrying platform / strength for your needs.

3) They 'add to' rather than 'lessen' consumption and therefore, their Environmental Impact is far greater.

Mechanarchy scours the Second Hand Stores, Junk Yards and Tips for a whole host of used and unwanted items. We also ask people to donate any old bicycles they don't want, in any condition, so that we can use them to make trailers and re-use the components in other bike repairs. Some bicycles we get are in very good condition, all they need are some minor repairs to get them back to a rideable state, you can check out what we do with these bicycles on the Mechanarchy Community Services page.

Mechanarchy can also custom build the hitch for your bicycle. Whether you want a rotating direct pull hitch or the flexing side pull variety, we can design, build and fit it for you. So what do we use to make your trailer? The photo's below represent just a small sample of some of the re-cycled materials we use.

This trailer is made from the rear axle of a tricycle. The axle was disconnected from the front frame, the Diff and Hub were removed and the cheap 'wheelbarrow' style bearings replaced with longer lasting and heavier duty sealed units. The 26" wheels were retained, however it would be possible to attach smaller 20" wheels if required.

The plastic box was courtesy of an old Local Council Re-cycling scheme, is UV Stable and sturdy enough to carry 45 Kg's and more!

The trailer weighs 11 Kilograms.

The drawbar was made from an old exercise bike, a modified chain swivel and a long coach bolt. The plastic bush also came from the exercise bike and it enables the hitch bolt to rotate within it, so that when you lean your bike around corners, the bike rotates but the trailer remains level.

The trailer stand was made from an old satellite dish support arm and can be folded up and tied when not in use. This trailer hasn't been painted in one colour, but all Mechanarchy trailers can be painted if required.

The bicycle hitch was made out of two struts from the tricycle, some alloy stays from a disused bicycle child seat, a 'be-headed' bolt and some old 8 mm flat steel for the diagonal supports. The trailer rotating hitch is held in place with an old tractor linch pin.

The total cost of materials for this trailer and bicycle hitch, an amazing A$50.00.

This trailer is 'on the expensive side', because of the new, heavy duty sealed bearings, but then again, because of its original tricycle rear axle, it could carry a good 60 Kg's. If you'd like something a little less expensive, we will over the coming weeks, be posting some new lower cost trailer designs for you to look at, copy, or if you prefer, put in a request for Mechanarchy to make for you.
